Das Substantiv, dessen Bedeutung mit »Grundrichtung einer statistisch erfassten Entwicklung, ‹wirtschaftliche› Entwicklungstendenz« wiedergegeben werden kann, wurde im 20. Jh. aus gleichbed. engl. trend entlehnt, das zu engl. to trend »sich neigen, sich erstrecken, in einer bestimmten Richtung verlaufen« gehört (< aengl. trendan in der Zusammensetzung for-trendan »durch Davorrollen eines Steins verschließen«). Das engl. Verb gehört zu der unter ↑ zehren behandelten Wortgruppe. – Dazu auch Trendsetter »jmd., der einen Trend bestimmt; alles, was einen Trend auslöst« (2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.s, aus gleichbed. engl. trendsetter) und trendy »modisch, dem vorherrschend Trend entsprechend» (2. Hälfte des 20. Jh.s, aus gleichbed. engl. trendy).
